Dear parents of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders,
I am very pleased to have finally met all your children. This week, as you may already know, the students received their textbooks and workbooks. Unfortunately, some students may have received science workbooks in less than good condition. However, this is a temporary situation as we are waiting for new ones on back order. If your child has a workbook in less than good condition, they do not need to cover them. Once the new books arrive I will distribute them to the students in need, and request that they be covered. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding. Have a great weekend.

2nd grade lessons for the week of 9/8/08

9/8. Aim: Students will review addition concepts, adding numbers with sums up to 20. Reread word problems to distinguish between relevant information and extra information.
Vocabulary: part/ whole/ addend/ sum/ skip-counting/ extra-information.
Lesson: 1. Vocabulary development: definitions written 2 times each and recited.
2. Assess prior knowledge of math skills, textbook pages 61-62 on loose-leaf.
3. Students will use counters or blocks to demonstrate one digit addition problems.
4. Problem Solving. Students will practice rereading strategy to see which information is needed and which is not to arrive at a solution.

9/9. Aim: Students will practice skip counting by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s up to 100. They will solve and write related addition facts.

2. Related facts: 2+4=6 and 4+2=6. Commutative property explains how changing the order of addends does not change the sum.

Mr. Badia's wonderful world of Science and Math
Dear parents and students of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th,
It is with great joy and enthusiasm that I welcome you to another exciting, stimulating, and fun-filled school year. As always, our goal to enrich the minds and spirits of our students is central to us here at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs school. I hope you all have had a wonderful summer and that you are as eager as I to begin.
This year as in the previous, I will be instructing the children in Math and Science. Students will be working individually as well as collaboratively in both subject areas. Students are responsible to complete all assignments and to prepare for quizzes and tests. All students will be taking a mid-term and final exam, with the 4th graders also taking the NY State Exam in both respective subjects.
In Science there will be a minimum of 20 experiments that cover topics that range from matter and energy to fossils and plants. In addition to our Science curriculum, the 4th grade class will also participate with New York City’s Green Apple Corp., a team of ecological instructors who are responsible in restoring New York’s parks and natural environments. Mathematics will continue to focus on the development of vocabulary, computational and problem-solving skills through the use of various methodologies and lessons in accordance to the standards set forth by the State of New York.
Preparation is a vital part of success. Below I have provided a list of supplies your child will need. I look forward to working together with you and wish all a happy and successful year. Remember “ no one plans to fail, except those who fail to plan.”
