1. Manny has two cakes that are the same size.  One cake is cut into 1/3 size pieces.  The other cake is cut into 1/4 pieces.  He wants to cut the cakes so they have the same size pieces. How can he cut each cake?

  • Wednesday: correct errors from this weeks math quiz on loose-leaf or notebook.


    c) Math Vocabulary Unit-5

    Week 1 and 2
    1. clockwise: moving in the same direction as the hands of a clock
    2. counter clockwise: moving in the opposite direction as the hands on a clock
    3. circle: a two dimensional curved figure with no sides or edges, that has a center that is the same distance to any point on its outer curve.
    4. fraction: a part of a group or whole number
    5. degree:  a unit of measure used to measure temperature as well as angles

    Week 3 and 4:
    1. common denominator: a common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions
    2. equivalent fractions: different fractions that name the same parts of a whole
    3. numerator: the number above the bar in a fraction that tells how many parts of the whole or group are being considered
    4. denominator: the number below the bar in a fraction that tells how many equal parts are in the whole or group
    5. equivalent: having the same value or naming the same amount

    c) Science Vocabulary Unit-5:

    Week 1 and 2:
    1. minerals: naturally occurring substances found in rock and soil that are neither plant nor animal
    2. igneous rock: rocks that are formed from melted rock material
    3. sedimentary rock: rocks formed from bits or layers of rocks cemented together
    4. relative age: the age of something compared to the age of another thing
    5. metamorphic rock: Rock whose form has been changed by heat and pressure.
    6. rock cycle: a never-ending process by which rocks are changed from one type to another

    Week 3 and 4:
    1. fossil: any evidence of an organism that lived in the past
    2. mold: a type of fossil that is a hollow form with a particular shape.
    3. cast: a fossil formed or shaped within a mold
    4. amber: hardened tree sap, yellow to brown in color, often a source of insect fossils

    Week 5:
    1. sediment: deposited rock particles and other materials that settle in a liquid
    2. minerals: a naturally occurring substance, neither a plant nor animal
    3. streak plate: a glass plate that a mineral can be rubbed against to find out the color of the streak it leaves
    4. luster: the way a mineral reflects light
