Math and Science Winter Break Assignment

MATH:

1.       Norfolk, VA has a population of 242,628 people.  Baltimore, MD has 376,865 more people than Norfolk.  Charleston, SC has 496,804 less people than Baltimore. 

a) What is the total population of all three cities?  

a.      b)   Round to the nearest hundred thousand to check the reasonableness of your answer for the population of Charleston, SC.

      2.       Billy has been training for a half-marathon.  He has a strict gym routine that he follows four times a week.  For the problems below, use tape diagrams, numbers, and words to explain each answer.

       a)      Each day Billy runs on the treadmill for 3 kilometers and runs on the outdoor track for 4,000 meters.  In all, how many kilometers does Billy run each day?

       b)  Since Billy has started training, he has also been drinking more water.  On Saturday, he drank 2 L 255 mL of water. On Sunday, he drank some more.  If Billy drank a total of 4 L 655 mL of water on Saturday and Sunday, how many milliliters of water did Billy drink on Sunday?

       c)      Since exercising so much for his half-marathon, Billy has been losing weight.  In his first week of training, he lost 2 kg 530 g of weight.  In the following two weeks of training, he lost 1 kg 855 g per week.  Billy now weighs 61 kg 760 g.  What was Billy’s weight, in grams, before he started training? Explain your thinking.

    1.       Melanie works in a bakery.  She bakes different types of breads.  She bakes 18 biscuits on a pan.  3 rows fit on the pan.  Draw an array to show the total number of biscuits.
        a.       Fill in the missing factor.  Write a sentence telling what it represents.

         b.       Write a related division sentence to find the number of biscuits in each row.


     2.       Melanie packs the 18 biscuits into bags of 2.

         a.       Draw a picture to show how many bags of biscuits Melanie packs.  How many bags of biscuits does she pack?

         b.      Melanie bakes 18 rolls and packs them into bags of 9.  Draw a picture to show how many bags of rolls Melanie packs.  How many bags of rolls does she pack?


         c.       Draw an array to represent her biscuits.  Draw a second array to represent her rolls.  Explain the relationship between the 2 arrays using number sentences and words. 

      3.       The carnival is in town for 21 days.  How many weeks is the carnival in town?  (There are 7 days in 1 week).  Write an equation and solve.


4.       There are 48 liters needed to finish filling the dunk tank at the carnival.  Each container holds 8 liters.  How many containers are needed to finish filling the dunk tank?  Represent the problem using multiplication and division sentences and a letter for the unknown.  Solve.

       1.    Trevor’s mom gave him 6 stickers to start his collection. He received 85 more for his birthday.

c.       Who has more stickers now, James or Trevor? 

2.  Mr. Garcia checked out 37 library books for his class.  The class read some first month and the remaining 19 books the second month.
  a. Use words, pictures, or numbers to find out how many books the class read in the first month of school.
b. During the third month, Mr. Garcia checked out 29 more books and his class read them all. Use words, pictures, or numbers to show how many library books have been read in all 3 months. 

        3.      Bill throws his bean bag 5 meters, which was 2 meters farther than Samantha threw her bean bag. 
                   a.   How far did Samantha throw her bean bag? 

                   b.    Sarah threw her bean bag 3 meters farther than Bill.  Who won the contest? 

                    c.  Explain how  you know?

      4.        Dora has saved 314 animal stickers.

             a.       Write the amount of stickers Dora has saved in three different ways by filling in the blanks.
